🚨 Every UK Traffic Stop Is a Trap — Say THIS One Sentence (A Solicitor Explains)

A British officer can pull you over on an empty road for no reason he has to explain — and there's nothing you can do about that. But the stop was never the real game. The game is the ninety seconds after your licence is handed across, when six friendly, practised lines go to work turning a routine pull-over into a search, a charge, a court date. This is the whole extraction kit — and the one calm sentence that shuts all six down at once. The six tricks, and what the law actually says: — "Do you know why I stopped you?" — any guess is an admission. You have the right to silence — "Where are you heading / coming from?" — that builds a timeline; you owe name, address and licence, NOT your evening — "Mind if I have a look through the car?" — a search needs REASONABLE GROUNDS (s.23 Misuse of Drugs Act / s.1 PACE), not your permission — "Step out of the car" — an order: comply with your body, hold the line with your words — "We'll just get a warrant" — police don't need one to search a car on grounds; if he had them, he'd be searching — "I'll call the drug dog" — a dog that isn't there yet is a threat, not a power; a stop can't be stretched to wait for one The one sentence — say it from either seat: "Officer, here's my licence. I'll follow any lawful direction you give me — but I'm not answering any questions, and I don't consent to any search." Then the seven words that carry you home: "Am I being detained, or am I free to go?"
