What does a choir made from pulsar radio signals sound like?
This is my pulsar version of Georgy Sviridov's "Reveille", the seventh piece of Pushkin's Garland. The original is a beautiful choral work, and I wanted to recreate it without using a human voice or a conventional choir sample. Instead, I used real radio recordings of pulsars. Their signals were heavily processed, pitch-shifted and shaped with formant filters, filter banks and EQ until they could take on the role of human voices while still retaining traces of their original character.
For the best experience, please listen through speakers rather than a phone. The choir is spatially distributed in four channels, and the soprano solo, represented by PSR B1937+21, even moves through the 3D space. Headphones will reproduce the sound, but unfortunately not the quadraphonic spatial arrangement in the intended way.
And there is another reason to use proper speakers. The original pulsar recordings are still present in the sound. On small phone speakers, much of that low-level character will simply disappear.
So turn up the speakers, give it a little space, and listen to what a choir from deep space sounds like...
