And roads that sometimes barely looked like roads. 🚙🏔️ Freedom Drive – Part 2 takes us deeper into one of the most remote and spectacular parts of Ladakh — from Hanle to Changthang and Tso Moriri, through high-altitude landscapes, rough tracks, sandy lake shores and some unforgettable encounters. Our Maruti Suzuki Jimny 4x4 became more than just a vehicle on this journey. From navigating challenging off-road sections to helping vehicles stuck on the sandy shores of Tso Moriri, the Jimny was our companion through some incredible terrain. 🌌 HANLE — WHEN THE SKY SURPRISED US We reached Hanle, one of the world's remarkable locations for astronomical observation, and stayed at a humble homestay. The entire day was cloudy. Our hopes of seeing the Milky Way seemed to disappear behind the clouds. But nature had other plans. After sunset, the clouds slowly moved away and revealed an incredible night sky. We stood outside for hours in strong winds and temperatures below 10°C, simply watching the Milky Way stretch across the sky. We also visited the Indian Astronomical Observatory, located at around 14,760 ft, home to the Himalayan Chandra Telescope. 🐐 CHANGTHANG & THE CHANGPA From Hanle, we headed towards the Changthang Festival and experienced a glimpse of the traditional life of the Changpa people. Living in one of the harshest environments of the Himalayas, the Changpa have traditionally depended on pastoralism, raising animals including sheep, goats and yaks. Their Changra goats are particularly known for the fine fibre used to produce Pashmina. For us, it wasn't simply a cultural festival. It was a chance to see how people live, work and find happiness in conditions that are completely different from our urban lives. 🏔️ TSO MORIRI — OFF-ROADING, CAMPING & AN UNEXPECTED FRIENDSHIP We reached the beautiful Tso Moriri Lake, surrounded by spectacular mountains and an almost unreal blue landscape. While searching for a place to camp, we found a few vehicles stuck in the sandy lake shore. So the Jimny 4x4 went to work. 🚙 And then came one of the most unexpected highlights of the entire journey. We met Shubham & Pannu, a wonderful couple travelling across the mountains in their modified camping van — complete with their own kitchen and bed. What followed was an unforgettable evening beside Tso Moriri. We cooked Gujarati khichdi in freezing winds. They cooked roti and egg curry for us. And then came hot Gulab Jamun. Add some authentic Ladakhi music, stories from the road, camping beside one of India's most beautiful high-altitude lakes… …and suddenly, two strangers had become part of our journey. ❤️ Some of the best memories on a road trip are the ones you never planned. This is what Freedom Drive is about — 4x4 adventures, remote roads, off-roading, friendships, unexpected encounters and discovering something new at every turn. From Ahmedabad → Manali → Zanskar → Leh → Hanle → Changthang → Tso Moriri → Home, this journey was much more than a road trip.
