A cozy detective sleep story, told softly for a calm, restful night.
It is wedding week on Juniper Street. At the Freeman House in Bronzeville, the coffee is on, the old depot hound keeps watch from the top step, and a young nurse is getting ready to marry in her late mother's heirloom gloves. Then, on a rainy Monday night, the groom's proud old uncle dies quietly in his study armchair. By morning, one of those precious gloves has turned up where it should never have been.
Booker Freeman, a retired Pullman porter, reads journeys: luggage, tickets, and the shoes a traveller walks in on. His wife Pearl, landlady and choir soprano, reads what people leave at home: kitchens, parlors, and the stories women tell under the dryers. Two quiet tracks, one gentle truth, and a wedding that may yet go ahead.
No violence, no loud surprises. Just lamplight, porch swings, train whistles, and a slow, soothing mystery to fall asleep to.
Narrated by Edward.
