On November 21, 1944, USS Sealion (SS-315), commanded by Lieutenant Commander Eli T. Reich, intercepted a powerful Japanese naval force in the Formosa Strait and began a dangerous night surface pursuit. Using radar to track the enemy through darkness and rough seas, Sealion maneuvered ahead of the formation and launched torpedoes at the battleship Kongō, while another salvo struck and sank the destroyer Urakaze. Although Kongō initially maintained speed after the attack, progressive flooding eventually forced the damaged battleship to slow, separate from the main force, and head toward Formosa. Sealion continued the chase and prepared for another attack, but before it could fire again, Kongō suffered a catastrophic magazine explosion and disappeared from the radar screen.
