A true jewel sheltered in Santiago Suchilquitongo.
The ARCHAEOLOGICAL ZONE "CERRO DE LA CAMPANA" is located in the town of Santiago Suchilquitongo to the north of the Etla Valley, 27 km from the city of Oaxaca. It was a religious-administrative civic center that influenced with great power and due to its strategic location it was a passageway for the Zapotec peoples of the north of the Etla Valley. The architectural remains that can currently be seen were built between 650 and 700 AD. C. and were occupied as the guiding center of the Zapotecs of the valley.
The place was abandoned around 800 AD. for reasons not yet specified.
The central sector is basically made up of 7 major monumental buildings, distributed on two platforms, the first of which supports Building 1, which houses the most beautiful and elaborate tomb in all of Oaxaca for its pictorial and lithic elements, the famous Tomb 5.
The archaeological explorations carried out in 1985 resulted in the discovery of tomb number 5, which consists of mural paintings with about 60 characters, two masks of the jaguar lineage, ten jambs with pairs of characters completely dressed from head to toe, glyphic toponymic and calendrical, as well as animal glyphs. The type of architecture is the most developed of the time. The pottery found in the tomb and its surroundings can be dated as contemporary to the Monte Albán epoch III, corresponding to the year 550 AD.
The tomb is a miniature version of the ancient domestic spaces, with a central courtyard, and its surrounding bench, surrounded by rooms on all four sides, reached by a vestibule.
The figurehead over the access door to the tomb represents 'Lady 10 Lizard Sun-Bird'
and the figurehead over the entrance to the main chamber represents 'Lord 11 Monkey Jaguar', who is identified as ruler by an intertwined band above his feline helmet.
Certain epigraphic details suggest that 'Lady 11 Tremor' and her husband 'Lord 2 Tremor' were the ruling couple who had the crypt and its genealogical record built.
