Before the Five Families. Before Lucky Luciano. Before the American Cosa Nostra became a national criminal network, there was Little Italy. This is the story of how the early Mafia took root in America — not in Hollywood, but in crowded tenements, immigrant neighborhoods, court records, counterfeit money, extortion, and a powerful code of silence. Our story begins in Sicily, where weak institutions and private protection networks created conditions that would later influence criminal groups among Sicilian immigrants. We then travel to New Orleans, where the conflict between Sicilian families, the murder of Police Chief David Hennessy in 1890, and the mass lynching of eleven Italian men in 1891 became an early and brutal chapter in America's Mafia history. Then we arrive in New York's Little Italy. In the 1890s, Giuseppe Morello emerged as a central figure in the neighborhood. His network became associated with counterfeiting, extortion, and the early organization that historians identify as New York's first Mafia family. In 1903, the discovery of Benedetto Madonia's body inside a barrel shocked the city and brought renewed attention to Morello's circle. The investigation also revealed how fear and omertà could make witnesses reluctant to cooperate with authorities. Then came Detective Joe Petrosino. As the leader of New York's Italian Squad, Petrosino spent years investigating Black Hand extortion and criminal networks connecting New York and Sicily. In 1909, he traveled to Palermo to investigate those connections — and was assassinated. But the story did not end with Morello. The Mafia-Camorra War, the arrival of Prohibition, and the rise of a younger generation including Lucky Luciano, Vito Genovese, and Frank Costello transformed the underworld. The conflict between Joe Masseria and Salvatore Maranzano eventually became the Castellammarese War, setting the stage for the creation of the Five Families and the Commission in 1931. Finally, we follow the long government crackdown — from the Apalachin meeting to RICO and the Mafia Commission Trial — and examine how the neighborhood that once stood at the center of New York's Italian-American underworld eventually changed. From Sicily to New Orleans. From Mulberry Street to the Five Families. From Giuseppe Morello to Lucky Luciano. From the Black Hand to Cosa Nostra. This is the hidden history behind the shadows of Little Italy. #AmericanMafia #LittleItaly #MafiaHistory #CosaNostra #FiveFamilies #GiuseppeMorello #JoePetrosino #LuckyLuciano #BlackHand #MafiaDocumentary #NewYorkHistory #AmericanHistory #OrganizedCrime #RICO
