Bombay, 1959: a decorated naval commander learns of his wife's affair, takes a revolver from his ship, and walks into her lover's flat. He confesses within the hour — and a city decides he is the victim. This is the Nanavati case: a jury that said not guilty, a judge who called that verdict perverse, a Supreme Court ruling still cited on provocation, and a pardon five years later. It's remembered as the case that ended jury trials in India; the full story is a little more complicated. Narrated by Tamsin. The Crime Vault: cases the headlines forgot. New here? The script was researched and written from the sources listed above. Some images are illustrative, and seven scene shots are AI-generated (the police-station desk, the letters, the empty courtroom, the apartment hallway, the newspaper print room, the warship at dusk and the cinema street at night), as is the thumbnail background. None of them is real evidence, a real location from the case or archival footage. No real photographs of the people involved are shown. 📷 Photos via Wikimedia Commons (graded and cropped): Adam Jones from Kelowna, BC, Canada (CC BY-SA 2.0); Akshaydhillon7977 (CC BY-SA 3.0); Aleksandr Zykov from Russia (CC BY-SA 2.0); AroundTheGlobe (CC BY-SA 3.0); Bhama R 257 (CC0); Brandonrush (CC0); Danny1232005 at English Wikipedia (Public domain); DesiBoy101 (CC BY 4.0); Don Christie (CC BY-SA 4.0); gineshgandhi (CC BY-SA 3.0); Joe deSousa (CC0); Joe Ravi (CC BY-SA 3.0); Nicholas (Nichalp) (CC BY-SA 3.0); Nicke.me (CC BY-SA 3.0); Pinakpani (CC BY-SA 4.0); Qwexcxewq (CC BY 4.0); Rodhullandemu (CC BY-SA 3.0); Sandra Cohen-Rose and Colin Rose from Montreal, Canada (CC BY-SA 2.0); Scan by NYPL (Public domain); Sharvarism (CC BY-SA 4.0); Subhashish (CC BY-SA 3.0); Subhashish Panigrahi (CC BY-SA 4.0); Sue Clark (Public domain); Thomas Metaxas (CC BY-SA 4.0); Thomas Quine (CC BY 2.0); Tom Beazley, published by aussiejeff (CC BY 2.0); tomislav medak (CC BY-SA 2.0); Udaykumar PR (CC BY 3.0); Unknown author (Public domain); User:Vibhabamba (CC BY-SA 3.0); Vaikoovery (CC BY 3.0); Vyacheslav Argenberg (CC BY 4.0); wilford peloquin (CC BY 2.0).
