His arrogance and cruelty caused fear among gods, humans, and all living beings. The gods, powerless against him, went to the Supreme Goddess Durga, seeking her help. Moved by their plight, she took a radiant form, wielding powerful weapons given by each god and riding her majestic lion. Durga engaged Mahishasura in battle, and the fight lasted many days. The demon changed his form—sometimes a buffalo, sometimes a lion, an elephant, or even a fierce warrior—but Durga defeated him in every form. Finally, with her divine power, she slayed Mahishasura, restoring peace and righteousness to the world. The gods and all beings rejoiced at her victory. To honor this momentous triumph, sage Markandeya composed the hymn Aigiri Nandini, describing Durga’s beauty, valor, compassion, and the awe of the universe at her glory. Today, this hymn is sung with devotion during festivals like Navaratri, Durga Puja, and Vijayadashami, reminding devotees of the power of good over evil, courage, and divine protection.
