Guilin can expand, but not across one continuous plain. Rivers, karst formations, farmland, groundwater sensitivity, flood risk and protected ecological areas steer growth into selected corridors. This video examines how Guilin’s physical landscape and planning rules shape urban expansion. It covers the six-district central urban area, construction-land change from 2000 to 2020, karst-related engineering risks, ecological protection controls and the trade-offs between housing, jobs, infrastructure, travel distance and environmental protection. The central question is not simply how much land Guilin possesses, but how much land is suitable, connected, legally available and technically safe for ordinary urban use. The result is a branching urban pattern rather than unconstrained concentric sprawl. Figures and claims in this video should be read within the scope and definitions of the cited spatial studies, statistical bulletin and territorial planning materials. 00:00 Why Guilin cannot expand across one continuous plain 00:45 Defining Guilin’s central urban area 01:54 Growth along rivers and transport corridors 02:55 Land-use change from 2000 to 2020 04:00 Karst geology, groundwater and flood risk 04:58 Planning boundaries and ecological protection 06:03 The infrastructure costs of corridor growth 07:05 Economy, housing and accessibility 09:11 How geography affects daily travel 10:17 Why terrain does not determine everything 11:20 The mediated role of institutions and people 12:24 Guilin’s narrower map and future choices
