Why Taiwan Matters More Than You Think

The chip in your pocket was probably made on an island about the size of Maryland. So why does Taiwan matter so much to the world, and how did it end up at the center of the biggest rivalry of our time? This video tells Taiwan's story from the start: the Indigenous peoples whose languages may have spread across the Pacific, Dutch, Spanish, Qing and Japanese rule, 1949 and the two governments that each claimed to be China, the 1971 UN vote, martial law and democracy, and TSMC, which makes most of the world's advanced chips. Then it lays out what Beijing, Taipei and Washington each say about Taiwan's future, in their own words. Every side's position is attributed, and disputed claims are marked on screen. 💬 What do you think Taiwan's biggest strength is: its chips, its democracy, or its location?
