There is a difference between a life you are living and a life you have merely continued. Between a commitment you renew each day with full awareness and one you maintain out of habit, obligation, or the simple absence of the energy required to change it. Kierkegaard called this difference repetition. Not sameness. Not routine. Not the mechanical returning of the identical — but the most demanding and most alive thing a human being can do: to choose, again, freely and fully, what they have already chosen. In this video I explore one of the most quietly profound and most underappreciated concepts in all of Kierkegaard's philosophy. We look at how he distinguishes repetition from both recollection and nostalgia — the two ways a self can become trapped in its own past rather than genuinely inhabiting its present. We look at what genuine repetition means for long-term relationships, for vocation, and for any serious commitment that must be sustained over time. We also look at how repetition connects directly to the leap of faith we explored last week — and why the life of genuine commitment is not a single dramatic act but a daily, freely chosen renewal of what one has already committed to. The practical question this video leaves you with is one of the most honest in the series. Not what you would recommit to — but whether there is something you are continuing that you would not choose if you were choosing freely. That question, sat with honestly, can change everything. This is part of an ongoing series on Kierkegaard and Existentialist philosophy as a practical toolkit for navigating modern life. We are now at Video 10 of the Kierkegaard arc — one more video before we move to Sartre. 📩 Weekly essay at wisdomwithinif2v.substack.com Hashtags #Kierkegaard #Repetition #Existentialism #Philosophy #PhilosophyOfLife #MeaningOfLife #AuthenticLiving #ExaminedLife #Commitment #Relationships #Vocation #PersonalGrowth #SelfAwareness #PhilosophyExplained #ExistentialistPhilosophy #PhilosophyForEveryday #WisdomWithin #InnerLife #SelfDiscovery #LifePurpose #Nostalgia #Hope #DailyPractice #ConsciousLiving
