This is Part Two of my walk around Lake Biwa. Yes, Part Two, although it was filmed before Part One. A walk around a lake has no real beginning anyway, and thanks to the order, the last cherry blossoms of late April are still in it. I set off from JR Ōtsukyō Station, whose name remembers a capital of the seventh century, when Emperor Tenji ruled Japan from this shore. Today it is supermarkets and apartment towers; the history is mostly underground. A short walk brings you past the Lake Biwa Environmental Research Center to Biwako Ōtsukan, the former Biwako Hotel of 1934. Behind it, an English garden was at the height of tulip season, its clipped knot garden framed by the lake and the mountains of Ōtsu. From there the path follows the shore north. Karasaki Shrine and its great pine are one of the Eight Views of Ōmi, famous as “Night Rain at Karasaki.” At Sakamoto, Akechi Mitsuhide once built a castle; almost nothing remains but a park and a red torii at the water’s edge. Then come quiet roads, rice fields waiting for May, a weeping cherry still in bloom, a free footbath at Ogoto Onsen Station, and finally Katata. About sixteen kilometres in all. This is a walking record more than a travel guide. Narration fills only about forty percent of the film; the rest is waves, wind and ordinary streets, so it works well as background while you study or work. The small map and elevation display in the corner shows where I am along the way.
