For the first time in about 60 years, a steam-powered train pulled into the Morrisons Cove area, outside of Altoona, PA - thanks to the Everett Railroad. 2-6-0 #11 was at the helm for this special trip between Hollidaysburg and Martinsburg - as a matter of fact, the whole day was unique.
The day starts with a ferry move from the shops in Claysburg, up that branch of the railroad (including some GoPro pacing action), past the depot in Hollidaysburg, to their other shops in Duncansville - travelling over part of Norfolk Southern's Cove Secondary line to do so - where they pick up the passenger cars, and head back to Hollidaysburg - again via NS - to begin the day's trips.
We see some on-board footage from the 11 am "Family Train Ride", which goes from Hollidaysburg to a run-around track at Brookes Mills and return - and then the 1 pm trip down through Roaring Spring to Martinsburg Junction. The engine is then wyed at Martinsburg Junction, and for the first time, runs facing north back towards Hollidaysburg - providing new vantage points on prior locations along the line.
After the train drops off the passengers in Hollidaysburg, the engine travels light, again over the NS Cove Secondary back to Martinsburg, where the engine is turned on the wye there, just outside of their shops. After turning, the engine heads back to Hollidaysburg, facing its normal direction, and proceeds straight to Claysburg for the night.
It was a long and busy day, perhaps the longest day this 2-6-0 has had in her new career as an excursion-hauling locomotive. Thanks to the Everett Railroad, hopefully this event can be repeated a few more times in the future. Enjoy Steam Into The Cove!
