WHERE DO WE GO?
In South Africa, women are told to be careful.
Be careful walking home.
Be careful at night.
Be careful who you trust.
Be careful where you go.
But where exactly are we supposed to go?
Home isn't always safe.
Work isn't always safe.
The streets aren't always safe.
And simply being a woman doesn't guarantee safety anywhere.
This song is a cry born from the fear, grief and exhaustion surrounding gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) in South Africa.
The scale of the crisis is devastating. Parliament reported that 957 women were murdered between July and September 2024, while South African research has estimated that about three women a day are killed by an intimate partner.
Statistics South Africa's latest survey also found that only 37.9% of people felt safe walking alone in their neighbourhood when it is dark.
And this is not simply about telling women to change their behaviour.
How much smaller must a woman's life become before she is considered safe?
Where Do We Go?
This song is for the women who are afraid.
For the families waiting for the sound of a key in the door.
For the women whose voices were never heard.
For the daughters, mothers, sisters and friends who should still be here.
We should not have to spend our lives calculating how to survive.
