The Ancient Warning About Refusing to Say Thank You

We spend a lot of time trying to maximize the transactional value of our relationships, but ancient thinkers recognized a harsh truth: in ordinary life, we receive a great deal more from the world than we could ever give back. In his 11th-century text The Duties of the Heart, the scholar Bahya ibn Paquda explained how failing to recognize our benefactors corrodes our inner lives. Because an individual incapable of feeling gratitude becomes permanently trapped in their own self-interest, they lose the psychological capacity to actually enjoy the things they have.
