How do you read a volleyball serve before it even lands? Coach Natalia Klementova breaks down the difference between a float serve and a spin serve — then gives you 3 drills to train your players to pick up the direction earlier and choose their angles faster.
This video covers the platform mechanics for absorbing both serve types (hips, shoulders, arm positioning) and three specific drills used to train early serve-direction reading, from basic zone recognition to using a visual focal point.
🏐 What's covered:
Float serve vs spin serve: key mechanical differences
Platform positioning for absorbing a hard-driven serve
Drill 1: Reading the server's arm to predict direction
Drill 2: Using an antenna as a visual focal point
Drill 3: Opening motion while reading a high serve
This builds on our earlier videos on platform fundamentals and passing — if you haven't seen those yet, check them out first (linked below / in cards).
