Following the establishment of *monotheism* by the prophet Muhammad, the Islamic world underwent a massive expansion across the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe under the governance of early caliphs. This rapid growth soon fractured along political and religious lines, giving rise to the historic divide between *Sunni and Shia* communities. Dynastic rule subsequently shifted centers of power to Damascus and Baghdad, where the abbasids ushered in a celebrated *golden age* defined by unprecedented scientific and cultural achievements. As central authority eventually waned, new regional powers emerged, including Persian factions, ambitious Fatimids, and incoming *turkic groups* like the Seljuks who assumed military dominance. The region faced devastating upheaval during the *Crusades* and the catastrophic Mongol invasions, which famously destroyed Baghdad and ended the traditional caliphate. Nevertheless, resilient military forces such as the *mamluks* successfully halted the Mongol advance and protected Islamic territories. Ultimately, the era culminated in the rise of powerful early modern states, most notably the **Ottoman Empire**, which unified vast territories and sustained Islamic leadership for centuries until its twentieth-century collapse.
