In 1991, an entire Canadian village was abandoned because scientists believed the ground beneath the area could fail.
Two years later, the warning came true.
On June 20, 1993, a massive quick-clay landslide occurred beside the former village of Lemieux, Ontario.
Millions of cubic meters of earth moved into the South Nation River valley.
Around 17 hectares of land were affected.
The river was blocked for several days.
And the landslide occurred only about 500 meters from the former main street.
But there were no villagers left to evacuate.
Authorities had already purchased homes and relocated residents from the dangerous area.
In this documentary, we explore:
• Lemieux, Ontario
• Why the village was abandoned
• The hidden danger of Leda clay
• The massive 1971 landslide nearby
• How scientists identified the risk
• The relocation of Lemieux
• The 1993 quick-clay landslide
• Why apparently solid ground can suddenly fail
• What remains of Lemieux today
Lemieux is a rare story where a town disappeared before the disaster arrived.
