The Doomed Story of the Polish 1st Armoured — the Men Who Sealed the Falaise Gap

There is a valley in Normandy the men who fought there called the Corridor of Death. On the ridge above it stands a stone memorial, angled to look out over the fields where, in the summer of 1944, an entire German army tried to escape a closing trap. Fewer than 2,000 Polish soldiers were ordered to hold that ridge and shut the door. They were surrounded almost as soon as they got there, with no ammunition coming and no reinforcements.
