The song "My Heart Goes Out" by Badfinger was written by the band's drummer, Mike Gibbins, and is reportedly about a real friend of the band who turned to prostitution and became estranged from her former life and friends. The specific details of the friend's life are not widely publicized beyond the general narrative mentioned, keeping the focus on the song's poignant lyrics about loss and regret.
Recording and mixing took place at Olympic Studios and AIR Studios in London from June 21 through November 21, 1973. The distinctive guitar sound on Badfinger's song "My Heart Goes Out" was achieved using tape delays applied during production. Producer Chris Thomas, treated the guitars with this effect to create a sound that approximated a mandolin or a delicate, folk-like feel.
The song appeared on the band's self-titled 1974 album, Badfinger (which was briefly intended to be titled "For Love Or Money"), and was featured as the B-side to the single "Love Is Easy" in the UK. It must be stated here that similar to the demos recorded by Mike Gibbins and songs on the album "Head First", these Mike Gibbins songs forego drums. "My Heart Goes Out" is one of Gibbins' finest songs as it may be one of the best showcases of his songwriting style and talents as a multi-instrumentalist and a sensitive observer of life's struggles.
