Nigeria’s political landscape is shifting ahead of the 2027 elections, with the International Republican Institute reporting greater consolidation under the ruling All Progressives Congress, a weaker PDP, and continued fragmentation and realignment among opposition parties. The institute also identifies economic hardship, insecurity and declining confidence in political institutions as major challenges to democratic participation.
Economic indicators present a mixed picture. The World Bank says Nigeria’s real GDP grew by 4.2 per cent in the first half of 2026, but an estimated 69.6 per cent of Nigerians lived below the $4.20-a-day lower-middle-income poverty line in 2025, while 50.8 per cent, or about 123 million people, lived below the $3-a-day extreme poverty benchmark. Inflation has also declined from earlier highs, although household incomes and living conditions remain under pressure.
Convener of The Alternative Movement, Segun Showunmi, joins the programme to analyse Nigeria’s changing political alignments, the economic realities influencing voters and the forces that could shape the 2027 contest.
