In 1994, a composer who failed his Mouseketeer audition built a score that lives inside the walls of a thirteen-story haunted hotel. That composer is Richard Bellis and the hotel is the Hollywood Tower Hotel. The music he put in that elevator shaft is an incredibly deliberate piece of theme park music.
In this episode of Area Loop, I break down the score for The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney’s Hollywood Studios — from the drop ride concept, to the Romanian avant-garde composer who accidentally wrote the Twilight Zone theme for $200 and what Richard Bellis is doing musically once those elevator doors close.
I also cover:
Marius Constant, Lud Gluskin, and the stock cue that became the most recognized theme in American television history.
Richard Bellis: EPCOT composer, Emmy winner, and the man who put speakers inside an elevator shaft.
Why the shaft score alternates between Jerry Goldsmith and Bernard Herrmann depending on where you are in the building.
And a bass breakdown of the four-note hook that makes you feel like something is wrong.

Area Loop is a weekly show about the songs that make the rides and the music that makes the parks. New episode every week.
