“I Was Afraid” is a song about fear disguised as wisdom, caution, and even faithfulness. Inspired by the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14–30, I Was Afraid enters the mind of the servant who buried what he had been given. He did not waste it. He did not lose it. He kept it safe. And that was the tragedy. The song is not about money alone. It is about what fear does to a person. It is about comparison, avoidance, paralysis, and the respectable names we sometimes give to fear: “I’m being careful.” “I’m waiting for the right time.” “I’m just not ready yet.” But underneath all of it is the harder truth: “I was afraid.” At the center of the song is a devastating realization: “The talent had not changed. And neither had I.” I Was Afraid asks what happens when we spend so much time protecting what we were given that we never allow it to become alive in our hands. It is a song about the cost of burying responsibility, the danger of comparing our one to another person’s five, and the sorrow of discovering that “safe” is not always the same thing as “faithful.” This is music for anyone who has delayed, hidden, overexplained, or called fear by a better name.
