The song was recorded in 1959. It was not composed by Dave Brubeck but by alto saxophonist Paul Desmond. The defining feature is the 5/4 meter. For a bassist, Take Five is interesting because Eugene Wright on double bass had the job of making 5/4 stop sounding “odd.” His double-bass ostinato provides an almost unchanging reference point underneath Desmond’s extraordinarily relaxed melody and, later, Morello’s drum solo. Rather than mentally counting 1-2-3-4-5 all the way through, the groove makes much more musical sense as 3+2.The bass line lacks complexity, but it works as a gravitational centre of the piece.
