Discovering Caddo Lake: Texas’s Only Natural Lake? ✨ Perfect Weekend Road Trip

Hello friends! Welcome back to the channel. 🌸 Today, I’m sharing our recent weekend getaway to the stunning **Caddo Lake**, located right on the Texas-Louisiana border. Spanning over 27,000 acres, it is famously known as one of the only naturally formed lakes in Texas—created centuries ago by a massive earthquake! My husband planned this entire trip for us. It was a beautiful 4 to 5-hour drive from our place. Since we had an early morning boat tour booked at 9:00 AM, we drove down the previous afternoon and stayed in the nearby city of *Marshall, Texas* (about 30 minutes from the lake), where we found a cozy hotel and some great Indian food at a local Desi Dhaba! Despite the summer weather updates throwing some flood warnings and thunderstorms our way, the weather turned out to be beautifully overcast and pleasant. The boat ride was absolutely magical. We navigated through narrow, maze-like bayous surrounded by ancient bald cypress trees covered in Spanish moss. Their unique roots grow upward out of the water just to catch oxygen! We spotted lovely water lilies, egrets, and herons, and while the lake is home to plenty of alligators, they stayed hidden during our ride. We wrapped up our trip with a quick drive through the historic streets of *Jefferson City* before heading back home. It was the perfect refreshing break. While Texas has thousands of tiny, naturally occurring oxbow and playa lakes, Caddo Lake holds the crown as the only large, deep-basin natural lake in the state. Almost every other major lake you see in Texas is a man-made reservoir! Caddo was originally formed by a massive natural log jam (and a powerful earthquake).
