What happens when engineers decide to build a 211-meter tower on land that was once part of the sea?
In Lusail, Qatar, the iconic Katara Towers rise 211 meters above the ground, reaching 36 storeys and forming one of the most recognizable silhouettes in the country. But the real engineering story is hidden beneath the surface.
Before the towers could rise, engineers had to deal with reclaimed coastal land, deep foundations, massive concrete structures, complex core walls, challenging floor slabs, and an unusual curved façade. The project used 8 structural core walls, advanced climbing formwork systems, and customized table-lifting technology to construct the complex geometry of the towers.
The design itself is inspired by the crossed swords from Qatar’s national emblem, creating the distinctive twin curved silhouette seen today.
In this video, we go from the ground beneath the towers to the final glass façade — exploring the foundations, excavation, concrete structure, climbing formwork, floor slabs, and the construction techniques that made Katara Towers possible.
