China spent 72.7 billion yuan on a canal that still cannot bypass the Strait of Malacca.
On September 16, 2026, the first 5,000-tonne cargo ship entered the Pinglu Canal. 134 kilometres. 72.7 billion yuan. It climbs a 65-metre water-level drop and drops straight down the Qinjiang River to the Gulf of Tonkin. The comment sections said one word, over and over: Malacca.
Last April, at the UN Security Council debate on Hormuz, Singapore's own representative put the number into the official record: the Straits of Malacca and Singapore carry about 23.2 million barrels a day — more than pre-war Hormuz. The country guarding that strait said out loud that it is bigger than Hormuz.
Most people assume the canal exists to bypass Malacca. It doesn't. Sail out of the Gulf of Tonkin and you still go through Malacca. What China is actually doing is dismantling a chokepoint into a network — so that no single node holds a veto over the whole system.
In late February, Hormuz really did shut down. China's crude imports fell to just over 8 million barrels a day in Q2, down more than thirty per cent from Q1. Yet a thirty per cent drop in imports did not become a thirty per cent drop in the energy system.
So why not? What did China actually buy with a canal that can't bypass Malacca? And after twenty-three years, how many roads with different failure modes would you have to cut at once to choke this system?
Today we start with the Hormuz war and work the Pinglu Canal ledger from the beginning. No slogans — just the numbers.
