NC vs BJP over Statehood Resolution in J&K Assembly | BJP Demand Dismissal on NC Govt, CM Omar & PDP

The statehood resolution moved by CM Omar Abdullah yesterday was less about statehood and more about reviving the autonomy and Article 370 narrative.By deliberately adding reference to June 26, 2000 autonomy resolution seeking pre-1953 position and Nov 2024 special status resolution, NC wants to again stress on Article 370 and greater autonomy. Real aim is to send a signal to its core Valley vote bank that NC has not given up on 370, even while asking for statehood from Centre. BJP sees it as a backdoor attempt to bring back autonomy debate which Parliament had settled on August 5, 2019, hence the strong protest and tearing of copies.. For NC, this is politics of appeasement - keep separatist-leaning constituency happy before upcoming panchayat and urban local bodies polls. Statehood demand alone would have got unanimous support, but NC chose to make it controversial to keep its ideological pot boiling.
