Near Naples, the ground is rising. What is pushing it up — and what can the evidence tell us about what happens next?
Campi Flegrei is a vast volcanic caldera beneath Pozzuoli and the western outskirts of Naples. By the end of July 2026, maximum uplift at Rione Terra had reached about 167.5 cm since 2005. Around 500,000 people live in the volcanic emergency plan's red zone.
This documentary follows the clues: Roman columns marked by the sea, the birth of Monte Nuovo in 1538, earlier crises that ended without an eruption, and the competing explanations for today's unrest. We examine what scientists measure, what their models suggest, and what remains uncertain.
Ground uplift is evidence of volcanic unrest. It is not a countdown to a known eruption date.
