Do you translate everything in your head before you speak English? In this lesson, Max and Ruby show you simple habits to build a direct road between English words and your thoughts, so you can answer faster and feel more natural. You will learn how to name things around you, talk to yourself in English, learn chunks instead of single words, and avoid strange word-for-word translations. You will also learn what to say when you forget a word, and useful phrases to buy time, so you never freeze in a conversation.
Listen anytime: while walking, cooking, commuting, or relaxing. Listen once for the meaning, then listen again and repeat the phrases out loud.
In this lesson:
• Why we translate in our heads (I freeze, it takes me a long time to answer)
• Start small: name things and describe what you see
• Self-talk: narrate your day in English
• Learn chunks, not single words: by the way, it depends on, I'll get back to you
• Word-for-word translation traps: take a photo, make a mistake, I agree
• When you do not know the word: "It's the thing you use when it rains."
• Buy yourself time: "Let me think." / "How can I put this?"
• Think in pictures, not translations
• Change your daily life into English: phone, diary, series
• Be patient: "I'm making progress."
• 4 conversations, a quick quiz, 3 practice moments, and 6 common mistakes
Practice: Look around you and name five things in English, with one detail each. Say them out loud.
