A pattern in the primes. Discovered on a napkin in 1958. Sixty-seven years later, nobody has been able to prove it.
Write the prime numbers in a row. Take the absolute difference between each pair of neighbors. Do it again. And again. Forever. The leftmost column of the triangle you produce is filled, all the way down, with 1s.
The pattern is rock solid through more than 340 billion rows. The proof does not exist.
It was first noticed by Norman Gilbreath, a graduate student doodling on a diner napkin in 1958. He saw the leading 1 appear, row after row. He had no idea why. We still don't.
This video is the story of the pattern, the verification, the structural reason it resists every available tool, and what it would take to actually close it.
