Henry Wessel Jr. (1942–2018) was an American photographer associated with post war West Coast documentary practice. Born in Teaneck, New Jersey, he studied psychology at Pennsylvania State University before relocating to California in the late 1960s. His work was included in the 1975 exhibition New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape, where he presented images of residential and suburban environments. He worked primarily in California, producing black-and-white photographs that examined vernacular architecture, streets, and everyday activity. Wessel’s photographic practice was structured through long-term serial production, typically using a 35mm camera to generate extended sequences rather than individual images. His work focused on repetition, movement through space, and the accumulation of detail across environments such as housing developments, deserts, and coastal regions. He maintained a consistent working method from the late 1960s onward, later incorporating colour while continuing to organise his work through discrete bodies of images. He also taught at the San Francisco Art Institute, contributing to photographic education alongside his practice. His publications include House Pictures (1992), Night Walk (2000), and the multi-volume set California and the West, Odd Photos, Las Vegas, Real Estate Photographs, and Night Walk (2006). Later books include Henry Wessel (2007), Waikiki (2012), Incidents (2013), Traffic / Sunset Park / Continental Divide (2016), and Henry Wessel: Selected Works (2019).
