How did merchants punish someone who cheated them? Since no authority could chase a man across borders, the punishment had to travel faster than he did. A single letter could spread the name of a cheat through an entire network within weeks, and no one in it would deal with him again. Guilds fined members and expelled them outright. Cities issued letters of reprisal that allowed a wronged merchant to seize the goods of any trader from the offender's home town, whether that trader was involved or not. This documentary explores letters of reprisal, guild fines, collective punishment, merchant reputation, debt enforcement and cross border justice. You will also see why punishing the innocent was the part that actually worked, and what it did to whole cities. From guild halls to harbour seizures, discover how merchants enforced honesty without a police force. #TradeHistory #LegalHistory #EconomicHistory #MedievalHistory #History
