In the movies, one match sets off every sprinkler in the room. In real US fires, about three times in four only one head opens. Each head waits for its own fire.
Getting there took a solder joint, a brass diaphragm and an insurance discount. The biggest push wasn't a safety law.
This film follows the automatic sprinkler: the perforated pipes of the 1850s mills, where one valve flooded a whole floor; Henry Parmelee's soldered heads of the 1870s; Frederick Grinnell's diaphragm head of 1881, animated after his patent and Gorham Dana's 1919 handbook; and the New England mutual insurers who made sprinklers a condition of cover and cut the premium to about a tenth. Then the Triangle Waist Company fire of March 1911, where 146 people died in a building called fireproof, with sprinkler pipes only in the basement, and the narrow New York law of 1912, written this time for the people inside.

ABOUT THIS FILM
Narration is an AI voice (Microsoft Azure neural text-to-speech, "Andrew").
Mechanism animations are schematic reconstructions drawn after the patents and the period handbooks credited on screen. Archive pages and photographs were recoloured, animated or redrawn for this film; each is credited on screen. Figures for today are from NFPA, U.S. Experience with Sprinklers (2024), paraphrased. Sound effects were synthesised for this film, apart from one CC0 impact sound (Kenney). No generative video was used.
