What you’re seeing here is the correct harvesting stage— we’re taking the 3 to 4 feet stalk. This helps control moisture and improves silage quality. But here’s the problem… If the forage is too wet, you start losing nutrients through this liquid— and that’s valuable nutrients going to waste. At the same time, poor harvesting stage and excess moisture lead to bad fermentation… and that’s where the foul smell comes in. Too late… and it becomes too dry, lignified and hard to compact. So getting the right stage and right size is not optional— it’s the foundation of good silage.”
