Shedeur Sanders finally got his first real preseason action against Chicago — and while the performance was not perfect, Browns fans still saw enough flashes to understand why the excitement around him has been building all summer.
This was the first game.
The first real live test.
And Sanders still found ways to make people pay attention.
Early in the game, the biggest thing that stood out was his willingness to attack. He did not look afraid to push the football downfield, challenge coverage, or trust what he was seeing.
Some of his best throws showed exactly what Browns fans have been waiting for.
The ball placement was there.
The confidence was there.
And at times, Sanders looked completely comfortable creating opportunities against live defenders instead of a controlled training-camp environment.
That matters.
Training camp can tell coaches a lot, but preseason football changes the evaluation. The quarterback has to deal with real pressure, different defensive looks, imperfect protection, and situations that cannot be completely scripted.
Sanders experienced all of that against Chicago.
And yes, there were mistakes.
There were moments where the timing could have been better. There were decisions he will probably want back when he studies the film. There were opportunities Cleveland would like to finish differently.
But that is exactly what a first preseason start is supposed to reveal.
Nobody should expect the finished product immediately.
The bigger question is whether the positive moments outweighed the concerns enough to create something Cleveland can build on.
For Sanders, the answer looked encouraging.
His better throws showed NFL-level confidence and touch. When he trusted the read and delivered on time, Cleveland’s offense looked capable of creating real chunk plays.
That is what should excite Browns fans most.
Not perfection.
Potential.
Because this was not Sanders walking into a regular-season game after years of NFL experience. This was his first major opportunity to translate everything he has been working on throughout camp into an actual game.
And there were definitely moments where it translated.
That does not mean Cleveland should ignore the mistakes.
Todd Monken will want Sanders to clean up the details, make faster decisions in certain situations, and continue improving his consistency.
But one preseason game should not become a final judgment either way.
The important thing is that Sanders looked like he belonged.
He did not disappear under the pressure.
He did not suddenly become hesitant because the game was live.
He kept attacking.
And every time he delivered one of those sharp throws, Browns fans received another glimpse of why his development has become such a major storyline.
This is still the beginning.
There will be better games.
There will probably be worse games.
But if Sanders can take the flashes he showed against Chicago and turn them into consistent execution, Cleveland may have something very interesting developing at quarterback.
This was not a perfect debut.
It did not need to be.
It was the first preseason game, the first real test, and another step in a much larger process.
And despite the mistakes, Shedeur Sanders still walked away with the kind of moments that keep Browns fans wanting to see more.
