"What Happened When a Roman Soldier Struck an Officer?"

This documentary explores one of the gravest crimes in the Roman military world: a soldier striking a superior officer. Drawing on Polybius's account of fustuarium, Tacitus's record of the AD 14 Pannonian and Rhine mutinies, Livy's account of the Sucro mutiny under Scipio Africanus, and legal opinions preserved in Justinian's Digest, it examines how Roman discipline, pay, rank, and ritual punishment bound legions together under threat of brutal, communal justice. #AncientHistory #RomanHistory #AncientRome
