What if a simple curved line could change the entire feeling of your painting? In this lesson, I explore how to use curved lines in art and how the direction, size, flow, and quality of a curve can influence the emotion and movement within a painting. I use my mystical owl painting as an example because I wanted to capture something very specific: the owl's quiet, watchful presence while still showing the energy and movement surrounding it. Soft, flowing curves can suggest calm, gentleness, tranquility, softness, and organic movement, while larger, sweeping curves can create a feeling of freedom, energy, and movement. Curved lines can also guide the viewer's eye through your composition. I'll show you how I'm incorporating these ideas into my own painting and explain what I'm thinking about as I work.
