KURDI BAYAT
Kurdi Bayat is a live santur solo in Bayāt-e Kord, combining improvisation, Kurdish melodic heritage, and a personal response to the anxieties of the present moment.
This project has three sections. The first two are presented in this video; the final section, Çûn, will be released in the next video.
The opening improvisation is based on an earlier musical sketch and inspired by a couplet from Saadi’s Golestan, Chapter Four, On the Benefits of Silence:
One hopes for goodness from others;
I ask no good of you, only do me no harm.
I have interpreted this couplet through the santur in response to my own state of mind and the circumstances of these days. My Kurdish and Persian roots, Kurdistan and Iran, are inseparable parts of my identity.
The title Kurdi Bayat was inspired by Abdollah Davami, who uses Kordi Bayat for this āvāz in his teaching. The opening ornamentation also draws on Hassan Kassai’s explanation of the bolboli tahrir, adapted here into the language of the santur.
The second section is Gulnîşan, a traditional Kurdish melody in a personal arrangement.
PROGRAM
1. Improvisation in Bayāt-e Kord
2. Gulnîşan — Traditional Kurdish melody, arranged by Siavash Kamkar
3. Çûn — Forthcoming in the next video

INSTRUMENT AND RECORDING
Performed on a transposing Lā-kūk santur made by Davoud Shirazi from āzād wood and equipped with the Ravān-Kūk fine-tuning system.
Reference pitch: A4 = 438 Hz
The instrument is configured in Shur on G. Its sounding result is Shur on A, with Bayāt-e Kord centred on E as the shāhed. Behind the fourth bridge, the nominal A course is tuned to A-koron, producing B-koron.
Recorded live with one AKG C414 XLS room microphone and a stereo pair of TELEFUNKEN ELA M 260 microphones. A faint cooling-fan noise from the film lights remains audible to preserve the natural character of the performance.
