Then we trace how the blood-bath story appeared more than a century after her death and how later writers, books, films, and popular culture transformed a complicated historical case into one of Europe's most famous legends. Was Elizabeth Báthory a brutal killer? Was she the victim of a political frame-up? Or could both parts of the story contain some truth? The evidence doesn't give us an easy answer.
