In this video, I'm going to take you right through those 4 things that are tells about whether you really want to make a safer workplace or you're just looking for an easier way to get stuff done.
Does your Workplace Violence Prevention Plan actually make your employees safer—or does it simply look compliant on paper?
For small California employers, there are 4 areas that can quickly reveal whether you've built a workplace violence prevention program around the real risks your employees face or relied too heavily on a boilerplate approach.
In this video, Mike Corwin breaks down those four areas:
1. Safety Hazard Assessments
A real assessment goes beyond saying, “Our employees interact with the public.” You need to understand how employees work, who they interact with, when and where they work, and the physical conditions that could create safety risks.
2. Active Employee Involvement
Your employees experience the risks firsthand. Their input should help shape hazard assessments, corrective measures, training, and the overall workplace violence prevention process—not simply be requested after everything has already been created.
3. Strategies to Avoid Physical Harm
Generic de-escalation or active-shooter training may not address the situations your employees actually encounter. Effective training should be connected to specific workplace hazards and may include situational awareness, communication, parking-lot and low-light safety, working in customers' homes, and other practical strategies.
4. Complaint & Investigation Processes
Do employees know how to report a workplace violence concern? Does the person responsible for investigating know who to interview, what information to develop, and how to use the findings to help prevent another incident?
These four areas can tell you a lot about whether your Workplace Violence Prevention Plan is simply a document—or an active system designed to protect your employees and your organization.
Mike Corwin spent 30 years investigating violence, including conducting internal workplace investigations and helping plaintiff attorneys build cases involving violence at business locations. Today, he uses that experience to help small employers implement practical workplace violence prevention programs.
