The version of The Three Little Pigs you grew up with quietly erases two deaths. In some of the earliest written tellings, the wolf does not just blow down the straw and stick houses, he eats the pigs inside them, leaving the third pig alone in the brick house as the sole survivor rather than the clever brother who saves his family. The documented record begins in the 1840s with James Orchard Halliwell, not with an ancient manuscript, and the tale's oral history before that remains uncertain. From there the story moved through Joseph Jacobs's 1890 collection, Disney's 1933 animated short and its sequels, and finally Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith's 1989 parody, each layer softening the violence and sharpening the moral until the dead brothers vanished entirely. The familiar lesson about preparation survives because it is easier to repeat than the harsher truth that planning can save you but cannot undo what happened to the others.
