Join me for a scenic 10 minute cycle ride from Arboretum Park in Rosehill, Derby along the peaceful Great Northern Greenway to the historic Breadsall Station Ruins.
This route is a hidden gem for cyclists and nature lovers. We start at the Arboretum, one of England's first public parks, opened in 1840 — before picking up the traffic free National Cycle Network Route 672, also known as the Great Northern Greenway .
The Great Northern Greenway: A flat, traffic-free path built on the former Great Northern Railway line, known locally as the Friargate Line. It has an all-weather surface, making it perfect for a relaxing ride any time of year .
Breadsall Station Ruins: The highlight of the route. The remains of this station, which opened in 1878 and closed in 1962, have been rebuilt to show the original layout. You can see the footprints of the waiting rooms, platform, signal box and lamp house a fascinating glimpse into railway history in Derby, UK.
Breadsall Railway Cutting (SSSI): This section is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Local Nature Reserve.
📍 Route: Arboretum Park → Great Northern Greenway → Breadsall Station Ruins
🌿 Terrain: Flat, traffic-free, all-weather surface
