Join me on Explornation as we explore the beautiful Helderberg Nature Reserve in Somerset West, discovering its fascinating history, incredible fynbos and the remarkable story of Peggy, the famous “Mother Goose” of Helderberg. Established in 1960, this reserve is home to beautiful indigenous plants, wildlife and peaceful walking trails. But one of its most memorable stories belongs to Peggy, a one-legged spur-winged goose who became a much-loved part of the local community. Peggy reportedly raised more than 87 goslings, all of whom survived, and returned to the same house every year after migration, announcing her arrival with a call from the roof. She lived to approximately 22 years old, leaving behind a legacy that is still remembered today. Discover the story behind this special goose, learn more about the reserve's history and join me as we appreciate the natural beauty right here in Somerset West.
