What It Really Takes To Become A U.S. Navy Sailor in 2026 – Boot Camp Revealed

Navy boot camp in 2026 is not the same training your parents went through. Since January 2025, U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command (RTC) Great Lakes, Illinois has been cut from 10 weeks to 9 weeks under the Navy's Navigation Plan, making it the most compressed version of Navy boot camp in years. In this video, we go inside exactly what it takes to become a U.S. Navy sailor today, from the first night of P-Days, the haircut and the one scripted phone call home, all the way to the final test that decides who earns the title of sailor. You'll see the full 9-week Navy boot camp schedule broken into its four phases: Indoctrination, Militarization, Evaluation, and the 12-hour overnight Battle Stations capstone. We cover the Navy swim test every recruit must pass, how Recruit Division Commanders (RDCs) control every minute of a recruit's day, and what has changed for recruits shipping out in 2026. Whether you're thinking about joining the Navy, waiting in the Delayed Entry Program as a future sailor, or a family member preparing for Pass in Review, this is the real, up-to-date guide to what to expect at Navy boot camp. Every enlisted sailor in the U.S. Navy starts at one place: RTC Great Lakes, the Navy's only boot camp, which graduated more than 42,000 sailors in fiscal year 2025, the most in over a decade.
