The Oracle of Delphi | The Ancient Greeks Called This the Center of the World

🇬🇷 Delphi, Greece — the sanctuary of Apollo on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, home to the most famous oracle of the ancient world. The ancient Greeks believed Delphi was the center of the world. In myth, Zeus released two eagles from opposite ends of the earth, and the point where they met was marked with the omphalos — the "navel" stone — which stood outside the Temple of Apollo. For centuries, kings and city-states climbed this mountainside to consult the Pythia, the priestess who delivered Apollo's prophecies in verse so ambiguous that misreading them became its own legend.
