Join me for a peaceful early autumn morning walk around Reimersholme, a small island in the Södermalm area of Stockholm.
It’s a beautiful morning with the first signs of autumn in the trees. We walk along the quiet waterfront, through residential areas and past traces of the island’s surprisingly industrial past. A couple of people having their morning dip in the lake.
Reimersholme was once home to a major distillery. In the late 19th century, the Swedish entrepreneur L.O. Smith, known as the “Brandy King”, established his spirits business here. The distillery later became part of Vin & Sprit and remained on the island until the 1970s. Some signs from the old industrial complex still remain, like the passage through the wall in the beginning, the gigant barrells etc.
We also pass Reimers malmgård, one of the oldest surviving buildings on the island. The estate is connected to the hat maker Anders Reimers, whos friends named the island after him when he moved there at the end of the 18th century.
Across the water we have views of neighboring Långholmen, another green Stockholm island with a very different history. For much of the 19th and 20th centuries, Långholmen was associated with prisons and correctional institutions. Today, it is a popular recreational area and the old prison is a hotel.
A quiet morning walk with water views, early autumn colors and glimpses of Stockholm’s past.
