Abu Simbel, beyond the Tropic of Cancer, is one of the most visible ancient sites in Egypt. Until 1960’s it was located on the west bank of the Nile River, between the first and second cataracts but, to make way for the Aswan High Dam, in a remarkable feat of engineering, the temple complex was dismantled and rebuilt in a higher position of the same area.
Built in 1244 B.C., Abu Simbel contains two temples, carved into a mountainside. The larger for pharaoh Ramesses II (1303-1213 B.C.) and the second, known as the smaller, has been built for queen Nefertari (1295 – 1255 B.C.), XIX Dinasty.
Travel diaries. Visiting Abu Simbel it was amazing. The guide told to me i stayed around three hours when usually around one.
The connection with the ancient past was totally.
Being outside and inside this monumental complex allows you to experience the magic that these temples created, appreciating the architecture, statues and decorations. Simply magnificent.
