Saturday night outside Lou's café: Bobby's Ford, Ricky's Chevrolet and Eddie's convertible lined up for the big race to the drive-in. June slides into the front seat, Del Hartley counts down on the radio... and the deal is simple: last one to the drive-in buys the shakes.
"Last One to the Drive-In" is an original early-1960s style rock & roll song with doo-wop backing: a double-stop guitar riff, pounding boogie-woogie piano, walking bass, handclaps and sax honks. Eddie sings, June waves at the sheriff, Bobby's muffler goes bang, Ricky gets stuck at the four-way stop... and when the movie reel breaks, the whole lot dances in the gravel.
If this took you back to a Saturday night at the drive-in, subscribe to Atomic Sweethearts and come back for the next ride with Eddie and the gang.
Who should've paid for the shakes: Ricky or Bobby? Tell us in the comments!

LYRICS
Last one to the drive-in buys the shakes!
(Buys the shakes!)
Step on the gas for goodness' sake!
Bobby's Ford and Ricky's Chevrolet
Lined up outside of Lou's café.
June slid in my convertible seat,
Ribbon in her hair and a tappin' beat.
Ricky revved and said, "What's at stake?"
I said, "Loser buys the chocolate shakes!"
Del on the radio countin' down,
"Three, two, one!" all over town.
Last one to the drive-in buys the shakes!
(Buys the shakes!)
Step on the gas for goodness' sake!
(Goodness' sake!)
Down Main Street past the five-and-dime,
We'll make the picture show on time,
Last one to the drive-in buys the shakes!
Past the school and the water tower,
Cruisin' slow at thirty miles an hour.
Bobby's muffler went bang and pop,
Ricky got stuck at the four-way stop.
June waved at the sheriff's car,
He tipped his hat and said, "Not so far!"
We rolled in first by a nose and a fin,
Hung the speaker and the show rolled in.
Last one to the drive-in buys the shakes!
(Buys the shakes!)
Step on the gas for goodness' sake!
(Goodness' sake!)
Down Main Street past the five-and-dime,
We made the picture show on time,
Last one to the drive-in buys the shakes!
Then the movie stopped, the reel went bad,
(Oh no!)
Whole lot honkin', the crowd went mad.
(Honk, honk!)
So we turned up the radio, opened the doors,
And danced in the gravel, the night was ours!
Last one to the drive-in buys the shakes!
(Buys the shakes!)
Step on the gas for goodness' sake!
(Goodness' sake!)
Down Main Street past the five-and-dime,
Dancin' on the gravel every time,
Ricky's buyin' all the shakes!
Chocolate, cherry, extra large,
(Buys the shakes!)
Last one to the drive-in buys the shakes!
